Construction is under way for a new $13 million, 250-unit apartment complex on the city’s west side on Two Mile House Road.

The development is a project of Indianapolis-based Sheehan Companies, which also developed Westwood Pines Apartments near West Hill Shopping Center.

River Stone Apartments will include one-, two- and three-bedroom units ranging from 700 to 1,459 square feet.

Jimmy Curtis, president of Sheehan Companies, said the complex will be upscale with attached and detached garages and a club house with a cyber café, club room, workout facility, business center, pool and grill area with an outdoor fireplace.

“Our intent is to create an attractive multifamily rental neighborhood complete with state-of-the-art comforts,” Curtis said.

He said the setting will offer rolling hills, mature trees and a hilltop view of Columbus.

“It’s going to be a beautiful community with a lot of nice trees and a couple of lakes,” Curtis said.

The complex is being constructed on an extension of Two Mile House Road just past the state highway garage.

A separate road is being built to connect the complex with Goeller Boulevard next to the fire station on Terrace Lake Road.

Framework has been completed on the clubhouse and first apartment building, and the first units will be rented in the spring.

Curtis said the entire complex is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2009, weather permitting.

Even with the recession, Curtis believes the luxury apartments will find renters.

“I believe there is a need, but how deep the market is will be determined,” he said. Curtis added that building during a recessionary time has its advantages.

“We’ll be there when the recession is over,” he said.

Curtis liked the chance to build in Columbus again and is partnering with Columbus resident Jeff Bush of Hickory Investors LLC.

“I’ve always loved Columbus and its great quality of life,” Curtis said.
